Taylor Merritt, P.Eng.
Taylor Merritt studied at the University of Alberta (2010) and is a chemical engineer by vocation but an investor and entrepreneur by avocation. His professional experience in the energy sector has primarily been midstream focused in operational and commercial roles. His investment experience is both individual and communal through entities such as Kain Long Short Energy LP, The Hillary Club and Hillary Oil Corp. Prior to co-founding Kain, he worked for Keyera Corp., most recently in business development and was the commercial lead for several gas processing facilities that handled an array of oil, condensate and liquids-rich sweet and sour gas. Prior thereto he was a field engineer at some of Alberta’s largest gas plants, living and working in locations such as Drayton Valley, Whitecourt and Grande Prairie.
Matt Hogg holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of British Columbia (2009) and a Master of Engineering specializing in Reservoir Characterization from the University of Calgary (2016). He is a co-founder of Kain and is currently an Engineering Technical Advisor in the Reservoir Strategies team at NCS Multistage, an oil and gas service and technology company. Previously he has worked as a facility and production engineer and has experience analyzing unconventional resource plays across North America, with specific expertise in assessing the Montney. Matt is passionate about energy and technology development, which complements a decade of investment experience through his own portfolio, Kain and The Hillary Club.
Spencer Ellis graduated with distinction from McGill University (2016) and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in Finance. He is a co-founder of Kain and became a CFA charterholder in 2020. Spencer currently works in the Corporate Development group at Keyera Corp., responsible for reviewing, identifying and evaluating strategic A&D opportunities accretive to Keyera’s extensive North American midstream business. Prior to this role he held the position of Credit Analyst, also at Keyera.
Tynan Unruh holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta (2010). He is a co-founder of Kain and is currently working as a Project Manager at Pembina Pipeline Corporation. His previous experience includes a role as Manager of Revenue at the tech start-up Yervana – a personalized outdoor adventure platform. Prior thereto he spent 8 years working for CH2M (Jacobs) on large industrial projects as both a project engineer and quality control manager – projects include the Surmont II SAGD facilities in northern Alberta and the PCT/K+S Potash export terminal in Port Moody, BC.
